I've been a vegetarian for over half of my life. I was even a vegan for close to seven years. So, I am no stranger to navigating shared meal scenarios where there will likely be very little that I can eat. Thankfully, my food restrictions are self-imposed, not born out of necessity from an allergy or intolerance. If I eat some pho that has been cooked with beef instead of veggie stock, I'll be A-okay and likely wouldn't notice. Those who avoid certain foods because it might lead to their demise must be extra cautious. Sometimes, it is even better to eat beforehand or bring your own food to the function if you think you'll go hungry. However, it's always best to check with your host or the restaurant in question.
In our story today, a young woman with a nut allergy brings her own slice of cake to her friend's birthday party to ensure a sweet treat at the end of her meal. She ends up storming off after her friend reprimands her — even though she did text her about it beforehand.

While I'm mostly on our protagonist's side in this situation due to her friend's mean reaction, I'm really at a loss as to why she couldn't just wait to eat the cake in the car or something.

I know that most restaurants have a policy banning outside food, but this argument seems irrelevant if none of the staff said anything about it. Ultimately, it was her friend that caused a scene over a slice of cake.
